Election Advocacy

The MMA believes that the first step to ensuring that we enact strong laws is by supporting and electing pro-medicine candidates in Maine and the federal government. As such, we have established the Maine Physicians Action Fund (“MPAF”), which is a nonpartisan State political action committee (“PAC”). The MPAF’s work is directed by the Chair, Jay Mullen, MD, MBA, FACEP MPAF, alongside physician trustees from across the State. We collaborate with the other physician-led PACs to ensure our voices are influential.

MPAF also works on the Federal level with AMPAC, the AMA’s political action committee, which supports medicine-friendly candidates nationwide seeking election to the U.S. Congress.

We need more physicians running for office because when your voices are in the room where policy decisions are made, the conversation shifts. It becomes more grounded in the lived experience of patients, communities, and those who care for them. As Representative Sam Zager, MD, notes, “Public office can be part of your practice of medicine, not a distraction from it.
