MMA Adopts Policy Reaffirming Commitment to Science, Evidence-Based Medicine and Public Health

On March 5, 2025, the Maine Medical Association Board of Directors voted unanimously in favor of RESOLUTION, REAFFIRMING SUPPORT FOR SCIENCE; AN EVIDENCE-BASED APPROACH TO PUBLIC HEALTH AND HEALTH CARE; SUPPORT FOR HEALTH EQUITY; AND A COLLECTIVE APPROACH TO THE GLOBAL CHALLENGES TO A HEALTHY POPULATION FOR ALL SOVEREIGN GOVERNMENTS IN 2025

The 30-member governing Board adopted the Resolution unanimously following an extended discussion moderated by MMA President-elect James Jarvis, MD. “In light of recent increases in and influences of misinformation and factual inaccuracies, especially among elected officials and other policymakers, including during the 2024 campaigns and subsequently, the MMA Board of Directors unanimously decided to speak out in support of sound scientific principles,” said Dr. Jarvis. “We urge policymakers to join us in supporting these principles.”

“Physician members of the MMA strongly support the principles underlying our professional surgical/medical practices – the scientific method, the accumulation of knowledge during more than 200 years of modern human history, and a commitment to public health and preventive medicine,” said R. Scott Hanson, MD, MPH, President of the MMA. “We urge our patients, our community partners, and our elected policymakers to join us in supporting these principles through which our health system has prevented or mitigated mental and physical diseases that caused so much human misery in the past and continue to threaten Mainers’ wellness,” added Dr. Hanson.
